The good news:
Consuming certain nutritious foods with harmful foods can help minimize the damage.

You splurged on: Hot Dog + Food Rx: Sauerkraut = Why it works:
Hot dogs are packed with nitrates, which have been linked to cancer, but topping your dog off with some kraut can help prevent damage. Sauerkraut is high in a powerful compound that may stop the nitrates from converting into carcinogens.

We’ve been hearing for some time that chocolate is an antidote to depression. But now some solid research has been done — and the results are unexpected.

Researchers asked more than 900 adults from San Diego, Calif., about their chocolate-eating habits, then used a standard scale to measure the subjects’ symptoms of depression. The data — published in the Archives of Internal Medicine — found that those who rated highest on the depression scale also consumed more chocolate — an average of almost 12...

True or False:

1. Olive oil is less fattening than butter.
False. One tablespoon of olive oil packs approximately 120 calories, compared to 100 for butter. But a food can be fattening and still be good for you. Olive oil contains heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fat. Butter contains artery-clogging saturated fat. I choose olive oil...

Americans shell out $23 billion every year on multivitamins and other dietary supplements. But is it money well spent?

Over the past year, a number of studies have looked at vitamin use and failed to find any significant health benefits. In November 2008, results from the Physicians’ Health Study II, a clinical trial of nearly 15,000 male doctors, revealed that taking vitamin C or E supplements did not lower the risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease. The following month, the Journal of the American...

Half a teaspoon may not sound like much, but a study just published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that reducing your daily salt consumption by that much--just 3 grams--may have far-reaching benefits.

The authors say such a small adjustment could "reduce the annual number of new cases of coronary heart disease by 60,000 to 120,000, stroke by 32,000 to 66,000, myocardial infarction (or heart attack) by 54,000 to 99,000"--and the annual number of deaths from any cause by 44,000 to 92,000....
